Softball Recap: Cottondale Snags Seventh Victory in Last Nine Games

Cottondale owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Tuesday. They blew past the Ponce De Leon Pirates 9-0. Considering the Hornets have won four games by more than eight runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Chrishaunna Dawson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Halle Riley, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kendall Benefield, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Cottondale has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for Ponce De Leon, their loss was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 4-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cottondale will challenge Blountstown at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Ponce De Leon, they will face off against Freeport at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.6 runs per game on average), something the Pirates will no doubt try to take advantage of.
