Football Game Preview: Berkeley Stags vs. St. James Sharks

The Berkeley Stags will head out to take on the St. James Sharks at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. St. James took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Berkeley, who comes in off a win.

Berkeley's defense heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed two weeks ago. They breezed past West Ashley to the tune of 39-0. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Stags' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 29th, while the Wildcats are ranked 88th).

Berkeley's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jonathan Mitchell, who rushed for 60 yards and one touchdown. Mitchell showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 60 yards. K'Den Foxworth helped out on the ground, rushing for 113 yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Berkeley was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 399 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 184 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

Another reason for the win was Berkeley's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Jahmir Heyward, Landon Jackson, and Marcus Henderson, who each picked up one sack apiece.

Meanwhile, St. James was beaten by James Island 63-7 on Friday.

St. James' loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Berkeley, their win bumped their record up to 3-1.

Everything came up roses for Berkeley against St. James when the teams last played back in September of 2024, as the team secured a 43-7 victory. In that game, the Stags amassed a halftime lead of 43-0, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
