Baseball Recap: Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Comes Up Short

Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale had lost eight straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 3-4 to make it nine. They came up short against the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, falling 14-2. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bears of the 10-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for Wadena-Deer Creek, they now have a winning record of 5-4. That 12 run margin sets a new team best for them this season.

For Wadena-Deer Creek's part, Ben Krekalu was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He tossed five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Krekalu was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season.

In other batting news, Carson Davis was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple was his first of the season. Connor Dutke was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale will square off against Pillager at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Wadena-Deer Creek, they will challenge Pine River-Backus at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
