Volleyball Recap: Mater Dei Extends Road Winning Streak to Six

Mater Dei had won six straight on the road, but on Wednesday they bumped their record up to 23-11-2 to make it seven. They had just enough and edged out the Orange Lutheran Lancers 3-2. The Monarchs haven't had any issues with the Lancers recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.

Ben Smith paced Mater Dei's offense, picking up 21 kills. Smith got some help from Jake Newman and his 60 assists. Newman was also solid from the service line: he led the team with two aces.

As for Orange Lutheran, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 21-13 record this season. They just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.

Despite the defeat, Orange Lutheran saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Brayden Weber had 17 digs and three assists. Jackson Crane also deserves some recognition as he had his first block of the season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mater Dei will face off against St. John Bosco at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Orange Lutheran, they will take on Cypress at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
