After a string of three wins, Estill County's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They fell just short of the Breathitt County Bobcats by a score of 4-3. The Engineers were not able to make up for their defeat to the Bobcats from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Jax Niece was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed since back in March.

On the hitting side, Berkley Hardy was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 4-for-4.

Estill County's loss dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Breathitt County, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-4.

Estill County and Breathitt County could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings. The Engineers (ranked 93rd) will meet Madison Central (ranked 35th) at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Breathitt County will square off against Hazard at 6:45 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (103 vs. 25).
