Basketball Recap: Minerva Santos and Claire to Secure Win for Alameda

Alameda proved they can win big last Thursday (they won by 45) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out the Arvada Bulldogs 31-29. This was payback for the Pirates, who suffered a 37-30 loss the last time these two teams met.

Leading Alameda to victory were Claire To and Minerva Santos. To almost dropped a double-double with 14 points and nine steals, while Santos posted four points. To has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last ten times she's played. Kekoa Hilbert also deserves some recognition as she posted her first blocks of the season.

When it comes to explaining why Arvada lost, don't look at Carmen Medina. Despite the final result, she scored eight points and eight steals. Medina is becoming a predictor of Arvada's success: when she posts at least five steals the team is 8-2 (and 3-9 when she doesn't).

Alameda's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-7. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 25.0 points on average over those games. As for Arvada, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-11.

As of now, neither Alameda nor Arvada have any future games scheduled.
