Softball Recap: Cathedral Catholic Takes a Loss

Cathedral Catholic dropped their record down to 13-7 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Christian Patriots, falling 7-0. The shutout was out of character for the Dons seeing as the last time the team failed to score was back in March.

As for Christian, their victory was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 18-4-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.2 runs over those games.

For Christian's part, Alyssa McCurty was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over six innings pitched. McCurty has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lucy Sherburne, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Sammy Baca, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cathedral Catholic will host Mater Dei Catholic at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Dons 3.5, the Crusaders 3) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Christian, they will welcome Point Loma at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
