South Caldwell dropped their record down to 23-2 on Thursday, which also ended the team's ten-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Watauga Pioneers by a score of 10-8. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Spartans, who until this game were averaging 2.72 runs allowed.
As for Watauga, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 16-11. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games.
For Watauga's part, Everett Gryder looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. Gryder has become a key player for the Pioneers: the team is 7-1 when he allows at most three hits, but 9-10 otherwise.
On the hitting side, JT Cook was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run and three RBI. What's more, he posted three hits, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Maddox Greene, who went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
As of now, neither South Caldwell nor Watauga have any future games scheduled.
