Softball Recap: McComb Comes Up Short

McComb extended their losing streak to 14 on Thursday, dropping them down to 1-15. They came up short against the Poplarville Hornets, falling 26-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Hornets this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 24-0 back in March.

As for Poplarville, they are on a roll lately: they've won 13 of their last 14 matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 16-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games.

For Poplarville's part, Ayla Buras looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave Buras a new career-high in strikeouts (five).

On the hitting side, Jolene Shaw was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in February. Adalyn Breland was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. McComb will venture away from home to square off against Amite County at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The Trojans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 20.3 runs per game on average), something the Tigers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Poplarville, they will head out to face off against Pearl River Central at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
