Basketball Recap: Cardinal Gibbons Drops Season-High Score on Athens Drive

There's no place like home for Cardinal Gibbons, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They put the hurt on the Athens Drive Jaguars with a sharp 89-69 win on Friday. The Crusaders' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Cardinal Gibbons had a senior duo take command as Damon Phillips went 8 of 13 from beyond the arc on his way to 26 points and five assists and Cash McSweeney dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Phillips has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryce Fitzsimmons, who went 7 for 11 en route to 11 points.

When it comes to explaining why Athens Drive lost, don't look at Derek Crumpton. Despite the final result, he went 12 of 16 on his way to 26 points and six boards. Those 26 points gave Crumpton a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Marcus Green, who went 5 for 11 en route to 13 points in addition to six assists and six rebounds.

Cardinal Gibbons' victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-6. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.5 points per game. As for Athens Drive, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Coincidentally, Cardinal Gibbons and Athens Drive will both be playing Broughton the next time they take the court. Cardinal Gibbons will host Broughton at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, while Athens Drive will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
