Independence took a 47-point defeat the last time they faced off against Sumner, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Tigers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 43-41 win over the Cowboys on Saturday. While the Tigers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

The victory made it two in a row for Independence and bumps their season record up to 9-4. As for Sumner, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-7.

Independence and Helix Mentorship & Maritime Academy will round out the year against one another at 6:00 p.m. on the 29th. As for Sumner, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Lakeshore at 6:00 p.m. on January 6, 2026.
