Basketball Recap: Rank Disadvantage No Problem for Mendon Unity

Mendon Unity lost to Canton back in December of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Thursday. The Mustangs walked away with a 65-53 win over the Tigers. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Mustangs' disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 371st in Illinois, while the Tigers are ranked 151st in Missouri).

Despite the loss, Canton saw an underclassman step up: freshman Bryson Brewer went 6-for-13 to rack up 18 points and six rebounds. Brewer also posted a block, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ian Burbridge, who posted 11 points and seven boards.

Mendon Unity is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-3 record this season. As for Canton, they suffered their first home defeat, dropping their record down to 5-3.

Looking ahead, Mendon Unity is taking a road trip to challenge Pittsfield at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Canton, they will be home for the holidays to greet Clark County at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The Tigers will be up against the Indians' rather soft defense (which has allowed 59 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
