Baseball Recap: Smithfield Takes Down Ranked North Providence

Smithfield faced North Providence in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Sentinels walked away with a 6-2 win over the Cougars. This was payback for the Sentinels, who suffered a 15-5 loss the last time these two teams met.

Smithfield got a great performance from Dom Lombardi as he struck out seven batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jayden Argenti, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and one triple. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Sean Dwyer, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

Smithfield's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for North Providence, they moved to 10-2 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, Smithfield will welcome South Kingstown at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for North Providence, they will take on Narragansett at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Cougars 2.7, the Mariners 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.
