The Yuma Outlaws will challenge the Wiggins Tigers at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Yuma proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by seven) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They won by a run and slipped past Wray 5-4. The Outlaws haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Lennox Huwa was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs. Another player making a difference was Chris Wario, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Wiggins ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Byers, sneaking past 4-3. The victory was familiar territory for the Tigers, who have now won three matchups in a row.
Larry Garcia made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Wiggins is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-5 otherwise. Garcia was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Isaac Flores, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Wiggins' success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 3-1 (and 4-5 when he doesn't). Arath Carrazco was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Wiggins kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 4-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Wiggins pushed their record up to 7-6 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for Yuma, their win bumped their record up to 8-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Yuma has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Wiggins struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Yuma couldn't quite get it done against Wiggins when the teams last played back in April of 2024 as they fell 22-17. Will the Outlaws have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
