Basketball Recap: Dulce Comes Up Short

Dulce lost against Mesa Vista back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The matchup between the Dulce Hawks and the Mesa Vista Trojans didn't end well, with the Dulce Hawks falling 59-42. While losing is never fun, the Hawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 120th, while the Trojans are ranked 24th).

Despite the defeat, Dulce saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Maddison Vigil posted 16 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Vigil has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Amari Castleberry, who earned five points along with five boards and four steals.

Mesa Vista was led to victory by Tana Lopez and Hannah Lopez. Tana went 6 of 14 on her way to 15 points in addition to six rebounds and five steals, while Hannah went 6 of 10 on her way to 15 points and three steals. Another player making a difference was Isabella Gallegos, who put up ten points.

Dulce's record now sits at 2-7. As for Mesa Vista, they pushed their record up to 8-1 with the win, which was their third straight at home.

Dulce didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 54-43 victory against Mora on the 3rd. As for Mesa Vista, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 58-34 win against Penasco on the 3rd.
