Basketball Recap: West Columbus Takes a Loss

West Columbus was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They took a blow against the East Columbus Gators, falling 65-24. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 603rd, while the Gators are ranked 257th).

Despite the defeat, West Columbus saw an underclassman step up: freshman Alaina Spencer posted seven points. Spencer is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games.

East Columbus' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Malia Graham, who went 7 for 9 on her way to 16 points and seven steals. Graham is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last ten games she's played. Mckenzie Spivey was another key player, going 7 of 11 en route to 18 points.

West Columbus' loss dropped their record down to 2-12. As for East Columbus, their win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-4.

West Columbus didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 47-23 defeat against Heide Trask on the 4th. East Columbus has also already played their next game (against Pender), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
