Volleyball Recap: Nelsonville-York Buckeyes vs. Athens Bulldogs
After flying high against Vinton County on Tuesday, Nelsonville-York came back down to earth. The Buckeyes fell just short of the Athens Bulldogs by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. The Buckeyes were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.
Nelsonville-York took a 2-1 lead headed into the fourth set, but sadly they lost the next two. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-12.
Several Buckeyes players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Ava Nungester, who had ten digs and one assist.
Evie Garland went supernova For Athens., getting nine digs and seven aces. That's the most digs Garland has posted over her last eight games.
Nelsonville-York's loss ended a 12-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 5-4. As for Athens, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 8-1.
Looking ahead, Nelsonville-York will head out to challenge Southern at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Athens, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Marietta at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
