Softball Recap: Carlsbad Takes Down Ranked Hobbs

Carlsbad faced Hobbs in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Cavemen/Cavegirls blew past the Eagles 9-2. The Cavemen/Cavegirls might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matches by seven runs or more this season.

Kalion Fuentes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Carlsbad got a massive performance out of Allyson Madrid, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most RBI Madrid has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Vianka Villa, who went 3-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.

Carlsbad was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .419. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .312 or higher in five consecutive games.

Carlsbad is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Hobbs, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-8.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Carlsbad beat the Eagles by a score of 10-5 later that day.
