Basketball Recap: Mariner Comes Up Short

Mariner was the 75-42 winner over Gateway when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Mariner Tritons were outmatched by the Gateway Eagles and fell 81-46. While losing is never fun, the Tritons can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 682nd, while the Eagles are ranked 272nd).

Jason Freeman had an outrageously good game for Gateway as he dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Leopold, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 13 points.

Mariner is on a 12-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-11. As for Gateway, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 6-3.

Mariner will take on Riverdale in a holiday battle at at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Mariner is facing Riverdale at the right time seeing as Riverdale is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Gateway, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Lehigh at 7:30 p.m. One thing working in Lehigh's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
