Baseball Recap: Madison's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

Madison dropped their record down to 19-6 on Thursday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Mira Mesa Marauders, falling 11-2. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Warhawks, who until this game were averaging 2.4 runs allowed.

Madison saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Keith Clark, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

As for Mira Mesa, the victory snapped their losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 11-14 record. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On Mira Mesa's side, Caleb Gerlach was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Gerlach has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Nathaniel Widelski was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Mira Mesa's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 8-14 when he doesn't). Khalil Graham was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Madison wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next match, a 2-1 win against Christian on the 12th. As for Mira Mesa, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 7-6 victory against University City on the 12th.
