The Calhoun Warriors will head out to square off against the Southwestern Piasa Birds at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Calhoun's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. Everything went their way against Greenfield/Northwestern as they made off with a 12-0 victory. The win was familiar territory for the Warriors, who have now won three matches in a row.
Audrey Gilman made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 19 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, firing off two home runs and eight RBI while going 2-for-5. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Annie Wilson, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Lilly Pelletier, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs.
Calhoun was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They are a perfect 11-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Southwestern hadn't done well against Gillespie recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Piasa Birds were the clear victors by a 14-7 margin over the Miners. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory the Piasa Birds have posted against the Miners since April 30, 2019.
Vivian Zurheide was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Kinley Lucas was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and one RBI.
Southwestern has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-3-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Calhoun, their record is now 15-6.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Calhoun hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .345. However, it's not like Southwestern struggles in that department as they've averaged .365. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Calhoun came up short against Southwestern in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, falling 4-0. Can the Warriors avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
