Leah Rice made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 14 over seven innings pitched. Those 14 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. She has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times she's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Dakota Dickerson, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. Jayla Alexander also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous four contest, Voyager Academy brought some dynamite into their most recent game. Everything went their way against Durham Academy on Friday as they made off with a 16-0 win. The Vikings' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Like Vance Charter, Voyager Academy also got a great game from a two-way player: Cameron Nelson. Throwing, Nelson pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Ella Bartes pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. At bat, Nelson went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Bartes went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Maleyva Pardo was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Caroline Burton, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run.
Voyager Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Vance Charter's victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-3. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Voyager Academy, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-6.
Voyager Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Vance Charter has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.2 hits per game. It's a different story for Voyager Academy, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Vance Charter's sizable advantage in that area, the Vikings will need to find a way to close that gap.
Vance Charter took their win against Voyager Academy in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 18-2 score. Do the Knights have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Vikings turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
