Baseball Game Preview: Bedford Bisons vs. Somerset Eagles

The Bedford Bisons will head out on the road to challenge the Somerset Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Bedford will bounce into Thursday's contest after beating Forest Hills, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. Bedford had just enough and edged out Forest Hills 5-4 on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Bisons.

Bedford saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gaston Watkins, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Another was Quincy Swaim, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Somerset put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. Everything went their way against Westmont Hilltop as Somerset made off with a 16-3 win. That 13 run margin sets a new team best for the Eagles this season.

Garrett Reese looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Cole Lucas and Zane Hagans did most of the damage at the plate: Lucas scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4, while Hagans scored two runs while going 2-for-3. What's more, Hagans posted two doubles, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Max Means, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.

Somerset was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .533. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .303 or higher in four consecutive matchups.

Bedford's victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-1. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.5 runs across that stretch. As for Somerset, their record now sits at 6-0.

Bedford couldn't quite finish off Somerset in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 5-3. Can Bedford avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
