Baseball Game Preview: Breck Mustangs vs. Southwest Christian Stars

The Breck Mustangs will challenge the Southwest Christian Stars at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Breck is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.

On Friday, Breck got the win against St. Paul Academy-Summit by a conclusive 8-2. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Spartans recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.

Josh Melnick spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on three hits and racked up seven Ks.

On the hitting side, Owen Van Horn and Garret Trench did most of the damage at the plate: Van Horn went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Trench went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Breck is undefeated when Van Horn posts two or more runs, but 2-3 otherwise.

Meanwhile, Southwest Christian fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Hutchinson on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 2-1. The Stars' loss signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.

Southwest Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Breck, their win bumped their record up to 5-3.

Everything went Breck's way against Southwest Christian in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Breck made off with a 10-4 victory. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Stars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
