III Section III recap Oct. 30, 2012
Desert Edge extended the longest winning streak in III Section III this week by beating Sierra Linda, 54-3. The victory was the 10th in a row for the team.
Ryan Finley put up the best numbers through the air as Paradise Valley defeated Fountain Hills. He finished with 26 completions for 375 yards and four touchdowns. Finley's favorite target this week was Jordan Brown, who caught nine passes for 124 yards.
C.J. Heard was the best wideout in the league this week as Desert Edge bested the Bulldogs. Heard racked up four receptions for 152 yards. Elijah Marks helped Desert Edge's passing attack out by catching one ball for 69 yards.
Kani Benoit was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 260 yards on 17 carries as Thunderbird topped Sierra Linda. Teammate Darren Dorrsey added to the ground attack by rushing for 71 yards.
6-foot-4 quarterback Finley of the Trojans is the league leader in passing yards this season with 3165. He has also thrown 33 touchdowns. On the ground, the Chiefs' Benoit has rushed for 1911 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Massiah Smith. The Tempe star has 68 catches for 950 yards.
Marks of the the Scorpions' is a few catches away from breaking 1,000 yards for the season. He needs only 76 receiving yards in this week's game against Shadow Ridge to get there. He has recorded 38 catches for 924 yards this year.
Saguaro's Luke Rubenzer is a mere 79 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Rubenzer has rushed for 921 yards on 82 carries so far this year.
Desert Edge led the league in scoring this week after putting up 54 points on George Burgess' team. Sawyer Lung threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 31 yards in the win.
