Baseball Recap: Elmira Comes Up Short

Elmira extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping their season record down to 5-5 in the process. They came up short against the La Pine Hawks, falling 17-5. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Falcons of the 5-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2024.

As for La Pine, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-6. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For La Pine's part, Dylan Newton made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. Newton also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because La Pine is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 3-5 otherwise. Newton was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Davey Taylor and Shaye Johnson did most of the damage at the plate: Taylor went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Johnson got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Taylor a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Elijah Sparrow, who earned one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
