Basketball Recap: Athens Drive Takes a Loss

Athens Drive was the 58-40 winner over Broughton when they last played one another two weeks ago, but their luck changed this time around. The contest between the Athens Drive Jaguars and the Broughton Capitals didn't end well, with the Athens Drive Jaguars falling 72-56. While losing is never fun, the Jaguars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 234th, while the Capitals are ranked 60th).

Despite the loss, Athens Drive still got an impressive performance from Marcus Green, who almost dropped a double-double with 15 points and nine boards. Green is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last seven games he's played. Chay Smith was another key player, going 6 for 15 en route to 16 points and five assists.

Even though they lost, Athens Drive was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Broughton only racked up one assist.

Jordan Page continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Broughton, going 11 of 18 on his way to 30 points and five rebounds. Page is becoming a predictor of Broughton's success: when he posts at least 20 points the team is 9-3 (and 5-6 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Christian Outlaw, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 16 boards.

Athens Drive's loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 8-11. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.0 points over those games. As for Broughton, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-9 record this season.

Coming up, Athens Drive and Leesville Road will face off at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday without much rest having both just played. One thing working in Leesville Road's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last ten games. As for Broughton, they will head out to face off against Enloe at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
