Baseball Recap: Wapakoneta Comes Up Short

Wapakoneta dropped their record down to 17-4 on Tuesday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They lost 11-4 to the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Redskins, who until this contest were averaging 2.62 runs allowed.

Preston Hinkle and Griffin Mericle stepped up to the plate in a big way. Hinkle went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, while Mericle got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one double and one RBI. That home run marked the first that Hinkle has launched this season.

As for Perrysburg, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 18-8. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.

On Perrysburg's side, the team relied heavily on Brayden Heitmeyer, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Heitmeyer is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ryan Rettig, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.

Wapakoneta and Perrysburg should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Redskins will face off against Ashland at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank advantage (50 vs. 187). Meanwhile, Perrysburg (ranked 74th) will meet Berea-Midpark (ranked 229th) at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
