Mayfield hasn't had much luck against St. Mary recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Cardinals are taking a road trip to take on the Vikings at 5:30 p.m. St. Mary took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Mayfield, who comes in off a win.
Mayfield is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Christian Fellowship a 22-0 shutout on Friday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Cardinals as it spelled an end to their five-game losing streak.
Jett Hawkins was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. Kyler Simpson was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and one triple.
Mayfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .676. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, St. Mary was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They came up short against Marshall County, falling 9-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Vikings have suffered since May 2, 2024.
St. Mary saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jake Morris, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
St. Mary's defeat dropped their record down to 15-8. As for Mayfield, their record is now 8-15.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mayfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .331. However, it's not like St. Mary struggles in that department as they've averaged .325. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mayfield might still be hurting after the 18-3 loss they got from St. Mary when the teams last played back in April. Can the Cardinals avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
