Basketball Game Preview: Alhambra Lions vs. La Joya Community Fighting Lobos

After both having extra time off, the Alhambra Lions and the La Joya Community Fighting Lobos will dust off their jerseys to take on one another at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Alhambra saw some tournament action last Saturday. They fell just short of Washington by a score of 45-43.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 76 points the game before, La Joya Community was a bit more limited in their contest back in December of 2024. They took a blow against Paradise Valley, falling 56-17. The game marked the Fighting Lobos' lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Alhambra will have to keep a close watch on Bella Begay and Samaris Pena, a pair of players who had a big impact on La Joya Community's prior game. Begay posted four points along with ten boards and four steals, while Pena earned four points along with six rebounds and three steals. Begay has been hot, having posted nine or more boards the last six times she's played.

Even though they lost, La Joya Community smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.

La Joya Community dropped their record down to 2-5 with the defeat, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season. As for Alhambra, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-9 record this season.

Everything came up roses for Alhambra against La Joya Community when the teams last played back in December of 2014, as the squad secured a 76-37 win. Will Alhambra repeat their success, or does La Joya Community have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
