Softball Recap: Leonard Wins Going Away Against Atlantic Christian

Leonard's game last Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Atlantic Christian Sharks as they made off with a 20-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Lancers, who have now won six games by six runs or more so far this season.

Yanina Varela made a big impact no matter where she played. She pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Arianna Sheerer, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Alexis Resto, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.

Leonard was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Atlantic Christian only posted a batting average of .200.

Leonard is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.6 runs over those games. As for Atlantic Christian, their loss was their sixth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-8.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Leonard will face off against Somerset Academy - Canyons at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Cougars have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.1 runs per game on average), something the Lancers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Atlantic Christian, they will challenge Boca Raton at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
