Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Annabella Payen and Sophia Mendoza Lead University to Victory

University had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Wednesday. They walked away with a 59-51 win over the Pine Ridge Panthers. This was payback for the Titans, who suffered a 62-22 defeat the last time these two teams met.

University was led to victory by Sophia Mendoza and Annabella Payen. Mendoza posted 26 points and three steals, while Payen dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 boards. That makes it five consecutive games in which Mendoza has scored at least a third of University's points. Imani Berryhill was another key player, putting up five points along with seven rebounds and four steals.

University was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pine Ridge only posted seven assists.

Pine Ridge's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Serenity Cressor, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 17 boards. Cressor is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down ten or more in the last ten games she's played. Another player making a difference was Brookelin Murray, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten steals.

University has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season. As for Pine Ridge, they dropped their record down to 3-11 with the defeat, which was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season.

University wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 70-32 victory against Trinity Christian Academy on the 17th. Pine Ridge has also already played their next matchup, a 48-37 loss against Seabreeze on the 16th.
