Softball Recap: St. Raphael Academy Wins High-Profile Game Against Ponaganset

St. Raphael Academy faced Ponaganset in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Saints had just enough and edged out the Chieftains 3-2. The victory was familiar territory for the Saints, who have now won three matches in a row.

Isabella Sousa was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

Sousa wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Jaliyah De Los Santos, who went 2-for-3 with two runs. Sophie Roman also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

St. Raphael Academy's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for Ponaganset, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-8.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Raphael Academy will welcome Barrington at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Ponaganset, they will face off against North Kingstown at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Chieftains' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Skippers have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season.
