Basketball Game Preview: Sam Houston Hurricanes vs. Southside Cardinals

Two dominant guards in Jakiyah Caldwell and Gabryela Galvan are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Sam Houston Hurricanes will face off against the Southside Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Southside will be up against a hot Sam Houston squad: the team just extended their winning streak to 21. Sam Houston breezed by Fox Tech to the tune of 64-16 on Monday. Given the Hurricanes' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 193rd, while the Buffaloes are ranked 1245th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Sam Houston's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Bre'yanna Murray, who posted 13 points. Another player making a difference was Caldwell, who earned 11 points.

Meanwhile, Southside posted their biggest win since January 3rd on Tuesday. They claimed a resounding 61-31 victory over Winn. With the Cardinals ahead 34-8 at the half, the game was all but over already.

Sam Houston better keep an eye on McKayla Flores. She was instrumental in Southside's win, going 10 for 21 en route to 25 points in addition to seven boards and seven steals. What's more, Flores also posted a 48% field goal percentage, which is the highest she's posted since back in November of 2024. Bethany Garcia was another key player, going 6 of 13 to rack up 15 points and six steals.

Sam Houston's win was their ninth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 30-4. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 28.2 points. As for Southside, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 27-8.
