Baseball Recap: Mt. Vernon Snaps Seven-Game Streak of Wins at Home

Mt. Vernon dropped their record down to 12-18 on Friday, which also ended the team's seven-game streak of wins at home. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Freeburg Midgets. The Rams were not able to make up for their loss to the Midgets from their previous meeting back in May of 2024.

Owen Burke was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (zero).

At the plate, Mt. Vernon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alex Kiefer, who went 1-for-3 with one run.

As for Freeburg, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 17-14 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games.

On Freeburg's side, they got a great performance from Christian Giovando as he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Beau Breyman, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April.

Looking ahead, Mt. Vernon will square off against Highland at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Bulldogs will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Rams surely won't give up without a fight. Freeburg does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
