Baseball Recap: McCutcheon Triumphs

McCutcheon won against Western on Saturday with seven runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Monday. The Mavericks came out on top against the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos by a score of 7-3. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Mavericks also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2024.

Reed Grimes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on two hits and racked up six Ks. Those six strikeouts set a new season-high mark for him.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jake Winger, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of McCutcheon's success: when he posts at least one home run the team is undefeated (and 3-7 when he doesn't). Rhett Clarkson also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

The victory made it two in a row for McCutcheon and bumps their season record up to 6-7. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games. As for Lafayette Jefferson, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-9 record this season.

McCutcheon will have a chance to go back-to-back against Lafayette Jefferson: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
