Basketball Recap: Avery Valentine Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Lamar Consolidated

Victoria East won the last time they faced Lamar Consolidated and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Victoria East Titans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 53-51 win over the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs. Given the Titans' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 486th, while the Mustangs are ranked 1327th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Victoria East's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Avery Valentine led the charge by going 8 of 13 on her way to 20 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kamryn Jackson, who went 7 of 13 on her way to 16 points and seven rebounds.

Victoria East was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lamar Consolidated only posted nine assists.

Despite the loss, Lamar Consolidated saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Praisegod Chinweuba dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards. Chinweuba has been hot, having posted eight or more rebounds the last six times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Aubrey Edwards, who posted 12 points and four steals.

Victoria East's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-11. As for Lamar Consolidated, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 11 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-19 record this season.

Victoria East will host Fort Bend Kempner at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Victoria East is facing Fort Bend Kempner at the right time seeing as Fort Bend Kempner is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for Lamar Consolidated, they will venture away from home to face off against Victoria West at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
