Basketball Recap: Marely Gomez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Fort Lupton over the Academy

Fort Lupton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 56-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of The Academy Wildcats.

Fort Lupton's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Marely Gomez, who went 7 for 15 on her way to 17 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kianna Lenox, who posted eight points in addition to eight boards and eight blocks.

Even though they lost, Fort Lupton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in six consecutive matches dating back to last season.

The Academy found their leader in sophomore Keara Pogue, who went 10 of 20 on her way to 21 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Pogue has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lilly Millan, who had 13 points in addition to seven boards and four steals.

Fort Lupton's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for The Academy, they moved to 1-5 with that win, which also ended their 11-game losing streak.

Fort Lupton will head out to face off against Platte Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for The Academy, they will host Rocky Mountain Prep SMART at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
