Softball Recap: Newcomerstown Falls to Minerva in First Game of Season

Newcomerstown unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They fell just short of the Minerva Lions by a score of 3-2 on Saturday.

Laynie Matchett was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over four innings pitched. Matchett was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-1.

In other batting news, Makenzi McConnell made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-2.

Minerva's victory ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-3.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Minerva beat Newcomerstown by a score of 3-2 later that day.
