The Tolleson Wolverines will challenge the Sunnyslope Vikings at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Tolleson barely beat Cesar Chavez the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Wolverines' pitchers stepped up to hand the Champions a 10-0 shutout on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Wolverines, who have now won six contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Tolleson got a massive performance out of AMARI LUCAS, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. What's more, LUCAS posted two hits, the most he's had since back in March. Another player making a difference was ANTHONY RAMIREZ, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Tolleson always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .568. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Monday Sunnyslope sidestepped Arizona College Prep for a 3-2 victory.
Bryan Mares spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on eight hits and racked up seven Ks. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Sunnyslope is 4-2 when he allows at most two walks, but 2-8 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Sunnyslope's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Workman, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Sunnyslope's victory bumped their record up to 6-10. As for Tolleson, they now have a winning record of 9-8-1.
Tolleson's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's matchup. The Wolverines have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Sunnyslope, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Tolleson continue to outrun the ball?
Tolleson came out on top in a nail-biter against Sunnyslope in their previous matchup back in April of 2022, sneaking past 7-6. Will the Wolverines repeat their success, or do the Vikings have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
