The action played out like a heavyweight title fight, as both teams displayed potent offenses but couldn't seem to put the other away.
Pleasant Grove started off strong when
Josh Adams returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a score.
Lincoln scored the next 14 points, before Pleasant Grove rattled off two more scores in the second quarter, boosted by the return of
Arik Armstead, who had left the game due to injury.
Trailing 21-14 at the start of the second half, Lincoln scored the next 14 points, including a 39-yard touchdown strike from
Zack Greenlee to
Osha Washington.
Led by quarterback
Cody Demps and running back
Mark Jenkins, who ran behind Armstead, Pleasant Grove knotted the score at 28-28 and then took the lead, 35-28.
With 27 seconds left, Lincoln responded once more, scoring a late touchdown. A 40-yard yard field goal attempt by Pleasant Grove sailed wide to send the game to overtime, where it chose to start on defense.
Both teams found the end zone and converted PATs in the first overtime. But after Pleasant Grove took a 49-42 lead, Lincoln scored on its possession to bring the score to 49-48.
Third-year head coach Brian Gray opted to attempt a two-point conversion, and it paid off, as Greenlee completed the game-winning pass, clinching the 50-49 win.
