The Alhambra Lions will take on the Willow Canyon Wildcats at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Thursday, Alhambra didn't have quite enough to beat Metro Tech and fell 20-18. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Tuesday (ten), the Lions still had to take the loss.
Lillyana Reyes made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-6 with four runs, two stolen bases, and five RBI. Another player making a difference was Deidrea Tree, who scored four runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-5.
Meanwhile, Willow Canyon entered their tilt with Ironwood on Thursday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 14-4 margin over the Eagles. That's two games straight that the Wildcats have won by exactly ten runs.
Mel Fox spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on 12 hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Bella Mora and Courtney Ray did most of the damage at the plate: Mora went a perfect 5-for-5 with one home run, five runs, and three doubles, while Ray went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five hits gave Mora a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Addy Cervantes, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Willow Canyon hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Willow Canyon's win bumped their record up to 10-6-1. As for Alhambra, their loss dropped their record down to 3-8.
Alhambra suffered a grim 17-0 defeat to Willow Canyon when the teams last played back in April of 2015. Can the Lions avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
