Softball Recap: Mariner Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Mariner ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-6 victory over the Fort Myers Green Wave. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Tritons have posted since February 17th.

Gabi Winters made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 12 batters over eight innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Morgan Tucker and Rylie Moore did most of the damage at the plate: Tucker went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Moore went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Thiana Condappa was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Mariner kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Mariner is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.6 runs over those games. As for Fort Myers, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-9.

Looking ahead, Mariner will face off against Lehigh at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The Lightning have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 17.7 runs per game on average), something the Tritons will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Fort Myers, they will head out to take on Parrish Community at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
