Basketball Recap: Monterey Comes Up Short

Monterey was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They had to suffer through a 70-27 loss at the hands of the Smith County Owls. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 349th, while the Owls are ranked 99th).

Gracie Burgess was Monterey's leading scorer, having posted six points. Haylee Trevathan held things down on the boards with six rebounds. She took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with two assists.

Monterey's loss dropped their record down to 1-12. As for Smith County, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a massive bump to their 6-5 record this season.

When Monterey and Smith County next hit the court, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. Monterey will try to stop Van Buren County's three-game winning streak when the meet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Smith County will try to stop Clarkrange's three-game winning streak when the meet at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
