Basketball Recap: Tikigaq Comes Up Short

After flying high against Nikiski two weeks ago, Tikigaq came back down to earth. The Tikigaq Harpooners took a 71-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Shishmaref Northern Lights on Thursday.

Shishmaref got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Corben Nayokpuk out in front who went 10 for 22 on his way to 24 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Ivan Davis-Nayokpuk, who went 7 of 15 en route to 15 points.

Tikigaq's loss was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-6. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.6 points per game. As for Shishmaref, their victory bumped their record up to 4-2.

Coincidentally, Tikigaq and Shishmaref will both be playing Unalakleet the next time they take the court. Shishmaref will head out to face Unalakleet at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, while Tikigaq will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
