Softball Recap: Calabasas Takes a Loss

Calabasas had lost 16 straight at home dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 0-16 to make it 17. They came up short against the Newbury Park Panthers, falling 16-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-1 on April 1st.

As for Newbury Park, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-10 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten games by six runs or more this season.

For Newbury Park's part, Krista Danklefs looked comfortable as she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Danklefs has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Yasmin Topinko and Janessa Gutierrez did most of the damage at the plate: Topinko went 2-for-3 with one home run and five RBI, while Gutierrez went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Gutierrez has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Riley Richardson, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.

Coming up, Calabasas will face off against Oaks Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Lions will roll in looking for their ninth straight victory, something the Coyotes surely won't give up without a fight. As for Newbury Park, they will challenge Westlake at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Panthers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Warriors have averaged an impressive 6.9 runs per game this season.
