Softball Game Preview: Doherty Memorial Highlanders vs. Wachusett Regional Mountaineers

Doherty Memorial hasn't had much luck against Wachusett Regional recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Highlanders will take on the Mountaineers at 4:00 p.m. Doherty Memorial's pitching crew has only allowed 2.7 runs per game this season, so Wachusett Regional's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

While Doherty Memorial's victory against Notre Dame Academy wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Highlanders sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-1 win over the Rebels on Monday. Surprisingly, this marked the Highlanders' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Riley Cormier made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

Cormier wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Kursonis, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one run. Another was Sarah DeFusco, who went 1-for-4 with one home run.

Meanwhile, Wachusett Regional beat Leominster 9-4 on Tuesday. The Mountaineers haven't had any issues with the Blue Devils recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

Doherty Memorial pushed their record up to 8-4 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.2 runs over those games. As for Wachusett Regional, their record is now 8-1.

Doherty Memorial came up short against Wachusett Regional in their previous matchup back in April, falling 4-1. Can the Highlanders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
