Baseball Game Preview: Kirby Cougars vs. Melrose Golden Wildcats

Kirby is 9-1 against Melrose since May of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. Kirby will head out on the road to square off against Melrose at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Kirby made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Overton, but they still couldn't quite topple them. Kirby was the clear victor by a 22-5 margin over Overton on Tuesday. That looming 22-5 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Cougars yet this season.

Elijah Cody was a standout: he got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs, two triples, and four RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Kirby's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 1-4 when he doesn't). Terrence Stephenson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, four runs, and five RBI.

Kirby was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .476. The last time their batting average was this high was back in May of 2024.

Meanwhile, Melrose never let their opponents score on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Power Center Academy 1-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Golden Wildcats have posted since April 18, 2024.

The victory made it two in a row for Melrose and bumps their season record up to 3-6. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 6 runs in those games. As for Kirby, their record now sits at 4-5.

Everything went Kirby's way against Melrose in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Kirby made off with an 18-9 victory. Does Kirby have another victory up their sleeve, or will Melrose turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
