Basketball Recap: Rapides' Luck Changes for the Better on Monday

Rapides won the last time they faced Grant, and Zayveian Johnson did his part to make sure it happened again. The Rapides Mustangs walked away with a 51-39 victory over the Grant Cougars on Monday thanks in part to Johnson, who went 9 of 22 en route to 27 points and six rebounds. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Rapides' points.

Another player making a difference was Antwon Jones, who posted eight points along with five boards and four steals. He is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last six games he's played.

Several Cougars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was A Sykes, who went 6 for 12 on his way to 13 points and three blocks. The dominant performance also gave Sykes a new career-high in assists (three). A Sykes was another key player, going 5 of 10 en route to 11 points and eight rebounds.

With the win, Rapides broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 7-14. As for Grant, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-15 record this season.

Rapides will look to defend their home court on Friday against Port Barre at 7:30 p.m. Grant has already played their next match, a 57-45 victory against Georgetown on the 28th.
