Texas Top 10 high school football games of the week

A powerhouse showdown tops the must-see games in the Lone Star state this week as Trinity and Carroll square off. With a combined eight state titles since 2002, Trinity-Carroll games are always special. This week's lineup of games also includes a handful of crosstown rivalry games.

1. Trinity (Euless) 4-0 at Carroll (Southlake) 3-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
These two Tarrant County powerhouse programs really have not met that often, but have produced some memorable games. Between the big, bruising Trojans and the pass-oriented Dragons, a combined eight state titles since 2002. Their area-round playoff meeting in 2006, won by Carroll 22-21, drew in excess of 46,000 fans to Texas Stadium. After not meeting from 2007-2011, this encounter marks the fifth straight year the teams have met, each winning twice. The average margin in the last four games is 4.8 points. Both are 1-0 in District 5-6A. 2. Henderson 5-0 at Carthage 3-0, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Henderson rolls into town for this District 9-4A-DI showdown with a bevy of talented skill players including wide receiver Trestan Ebner, orally committed to TCU. Look for Carthage to lean on a ground attack that features Keaontay Ingram running behind the blocking of lineman Tanner Elliott.

3. Cameron Yoe (Cameron) 4-1 at Franklin 5-0, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Both teams were Class 3A finalists a year ago, Yoe in DI and Franklin in DII. The Yoemen love to throw to wide receiver Sicory Smith, who had over 1,500 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns last season. The Lions' offense goes through running back Rodrick Green. Both teams are 1-0 in District 10-3A-DI.

4. Lufkin 4-1 at The Woodlands 4-0, 7:30 p.m. Friday
A Highlanders defense that allowed only eight points per game last year has maintained its strength. And now The Woodlands has a potent offense, under the direction of quarterback Eric Schmid. Lufkin so far appears comfortable with its return to the top classification. Speedy quarterback Kordell Rodgers (Texas State pledge) threw for 23 touchdowns and over 2,000 yards last year and often looks in the direction of receiver Dhailon Phillips. In District 12-6A competition, Lufkin is 1-0 and The Woodlands is playing its opener.

5. Pearland 4-1 at Alief Taylor (Houston) 5-0, 7 p.m. Friday
New head coach Brian Randle has Alief Taylor on a roll. Offensive tackle Eleasah Anderson and defensive tackle Kobie Whiteside set the tone for physical play up front. Pearland has a talented defensive tackle in 305-pound Jordan Crawford backed by veteran linebacker Derek Parish and defensive back Debione Renfro. Both teams are 1-0 in District 23-6A.



6. Churchill (San Antonio) 4-1 at Reagan (San Antonio) 4-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
The neighboring schools qualified for the playoffs in the Class 6A-DI division last year. Reagan was undefeated in the regular season and returns leading tackler Kyle Andersen and 1,000-yard rusher Marquis Duncan. Linebacker Cort Jaquess and nose guard Ben Andrade are defensive leaders for Churchill. Both teams won District 26-6A openers.

7. Frisco 4-0 at Lone Star (Frisco) 3-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
This District 13-5A clash presents a contrast of styles. Running plays by Frisco have outnumbered passes 212-9. Jamal Stanfield leads the attack with 558 yards and nine touchdowns. Lone Star quarterback Jason Shelley, verbally committed to Utah, has thrown 106 passes for 1,075 yards and eight touchdowns.

8. Bowie (El Paso) 4-0 at Andress (El Paso) 3-1, 7 p.m. Friday
Helping Bowie to its fast start is a pass rush that has created five sacks and helped force opponents into six interceptions. Senior Patrick Moran accounts for four of the picks. Sophomore quarterback Dominique Smith leads Andress with over 500 passing yards and 200 more on the ground. Both teams are 1-0 in District 1-5A

9. Guyer (Denton) 3-1 at Plano East 2-2, 7:30 p.m. Friday
The season statistics for these District 6-6A foes are similar except in yards allowed. Guyer opponents are averaging 293 yards per game while Plano East opponents are gaining at a 420 clip. The Panthers will have to be better on defense, and that means zeroing in on Guyer's running back tandem of Noah Cain and Myron Mason.

10. Kennedale 2-2 vs. West Orange-Stark (Orange) 4-0 at Nacogdoches 7:30 p.m. Friday
For the second consecutive week, Kennedale ventures deep into East Texas, this time at the neutral site of Nacogdoches to face defending Class 4A-DII state champion West-Orange Stark. Sophomore running back De'shaun Kirven leads Kennedale. The Mustangs look for ways to get the ball in the hands of senior K.J. Miller.
